Fall silent
and realize His love

Week 5

Opening Prayer

+ Lord, I fall silent before you now, humbly realizing your love for me.

Scripture

Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery…. They said to him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. Now in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?”
Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with his finger. But when they continued asking him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again he bent down and wrote on the ground. And in response,
they went away one by one, beginning with the elders….

Then Jesus straightened up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”She replied, “No one, sir.”Then Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go, and from now on do not sin any more.” (cf. John 8.1-11)

Meditation

All humans sin. It’s part of our fallen nature. The only perfect humans were Mary and Jesus. As humans we take charge of blaming others and sometimes let their sins be known. But we have no authority to judge others for sinning when we sin ourselves. I can relate to everyone in this
week’s scripture; the accusers and the accused, and the knowing that I have no authority over someone else’s sins, but only my own. God is such a forgiving Father and He died for us so that we can be saved from sin and be with Him.

God is the only one who is all merciful, but people here on earth also display some mercy as well. There are small amounts, like when a teacher exempts you from a homework assignment. But there are bigger amounts of mercy such as a soldier sparing the life of another. God is the
most merciful God, and He always wants us to run to Him.

There are many things that make me imagine that God doesn’t love me. I know that this is not true. But we humans are susceptible to temptation, the devil gets into our heads when we are weakest. He makes us think that we are alone and that we are not loved. Spiritual dryness is another big factor.  When you feel like you are alone and it’s hard to push forward, know that God is always there and He always will love you.

Reflection

1) Again, how do I relate to each person mentioned in this gospel account? Do I connect more with one person?

2) Who are the people who embody God’s all-consuming mercy for me?

3) Can I imagine this kind of experience in the Sacrament of Reconciliation?

4) What are the things in my life that I imagine defy God’s unconditional love for me?

5) What are the things in other people’s lives that defy my unconditional love for them?

Closing Prayer

Lord you have done great things for me; I fall silent, filled with joy.
