Introduction: The Paschal Mystery

Meditation:

The events of this holy week represent the final leg of the Lord’s journey to Jerusalem – a journey which brought him to his final destiny.

These next seven days summarize the drama of redemption, what we Christians call the Paschal Mystery.

What is this mystery?  A stark reality of intense suffering leading to a brutal death.  Yet what makes it a mystery is the thread of hope through it all, the tremendous act of love, forgiveness, and sacrifice.  And finally, the fact that this week does not end with death….but with the transformation to new life, new dreams, and greater possibilities.

This journey

                  from life

                           through death

                                      to new life,

                                             is our journey too.

Jerusalem…this journey…is our destiny -- as individuals, as faith communities, as the People of God.

In our retreat today, we will reflect on this journey as we begin this celebration of Holy Week.  We will reflect on Jesus’ Passion and will identify our own personal experiences of the Paschal Mystery, which we remember and seek healing from during this sacred time.

Each segment will contain a scripture passage, video, meditation, reflection questions, and prayer.  If possible share answers to reflection questions with a godparent, friend, or family member.

Prayer:

Begin by very prayerfully and distinctly making the Sign of the Cross, entrusting this time to God - Father, Son, Holy Spirit, and entering into the Paschal Mystery, as indicated by the cross you are making.
